This is the post box on the wall up my street. These ones may not be as iconic as the pillar boxes, but I like the way you get to put your letters into the wall because it seems really secure like putting your secrets into a safe.
The first Royal Mail post box was installed in 1854. They were originally green but were painted bright red to improve visibility in 1874. In 1939, at the start of World War II they coated some of the freestanding pillar boxes with a special green paint that would react to a gas attack and chance colour to act as a warning beacon. They painted others white to aid visibility and movement on blacked out streets. There are 115 000 red post boxes in all and they get repainted once every three years to keep them gleaming. 94% of the population has a post box within a mile of their home.
Royal Mail post box, £0.23 for Second Class postage.
